My working life

I was thinking... which of my jobs I've worked would I say was my favorite?  I decided to break it down here.

Like most kids in high school me first job was fast food.  I worked at Burger Chef. I didn't love it but it was money. I had to drive 35 minutes to work because I lived with my parents in Glenford and drove to Newark for work. Little did I know at the time but that would be my normal work commute for most my jobs. I worked my way up to a management position pretty quickly but didn't like it. I took the management job to build my resume but knew I wasn't meant to work in fast food.

Second job was at Meijer. That was the best decision I ever made. I worked as a cashier then moved to the service desk. Then they placed me on third shift working in the cash office. I basically was locked in a room by myself, counting money all night from all the days cashier drawers. Ken was the third shift store manager. I had to call him to unlock the safe, double check any big shortages and to let me back in the room after breaks and etc. I got to know him pretty well since we worked together five days a week. He was going through a divorce and was in a tough place in his life. He was very proud of one thing. His baby girl, Stephanie. I didn't know at the time that I would be blessed with having her for a daughter.  As we became closer, I had to change to day shift so he wouldn't be my boss so we could date. Which brings me to my third job.

I started working part time at Central Trust as a bank Teller while still working at Meijer and Ken and I were married in 1991. Our friend Cindy got me on at the bank and I really liked it there. I stopped working at Meijer and just worked at the bank after we had saved up some money and had the debt from Ken's divorce paid off. Central Trust was bought out by Bank One which was bought out by Chase. That was very interesting.  Each buy out was a challenge to get through but I still loved it.  I worked for the banks for 8 years. I was a teller, vault teller, loan officer and account executive. We had a small branch and the girls I worked with and our boss were all amazing. We were like a big family and won a ton of company awards when we were Bank One.  Ken and I had Kyle and Ashley during the time I worked here.  I worked part time after they came along.  Both times I was pregnant, so were other girls I worked with. It was fun to go through the pregnancies with other girls going through the same thing.  I wouldn't have ever left Chase but, Ken had a career opportunity that we couldn't refuse and we moved to Forest, Ohio.

I didn't work while we lived there. I just got to be a mommy. It was wonderful.  We loved living there.  Our home was across from the park so spent a lot of time there.  We drove back to Newark on Fridays and picked Stephanie up so we could see her on the weekends and Ken drove her back on Sunday so he could have some one on one time with her. We lived there for three years and then Meijer transferred Ken back closer to home so we moved to Heath.

I started working again but only part time. It was Cindy again who recommended me for a job working as a receptionist for Si Digman Accounting, LLC. I put the kids on the bus and was home in time to get them off. It was perfect!  But after a couple years, once again Ken was transferred.  So I had to quit my job and move to Beavercreek, Ohio.  I didn't work again while we lived here and I was happy with that. We had so much fun here.  We had a great neighborhood to raise kids.  We had great experiences and opportunities while we lived there.  We were transferred again back closer to home.  We moved to Johnstown where we still live.

I again went back to work. This time it was with H&R Block. I started as a receptionist at the Johnstown office. Then I became a tax professional after going through classes. I moved up to manager for next couple years. I worked in Mount Vernon one year then went to the District office in Newark and ran it for a year. Four years ago I changed positions within the company again and started working as a District Operations Specialist in Gahanna. This is the position I currently hold. Our team oversees 50 offices in and around the Columbus area. We do all the hiring and off boarding of associates, handle remodeling and maintenance issues, supplies, billing, vendors, set up all the classrooms and training centers and support any and all operational issues. I can honestly say I have not had a minute to be bored since being in this crazy role. Every day brings something different and a new challenge to get through. I was sent to Kansas City this past year to accept the award for All Star Operations. The best part is getting 8 weeks off in the summer! Which I'm always ready for come June.

I've been very blessed when it comes to work. I've never done anything that I really hated. I have been pushed and challenged but that's not always a bad thing.  Life is too short to do anything you hate.  You are never to old to learn something new or to make a change.  Life is all about change and moving forward.

What's your favorite job and why?
